Role of Diet Plan in Losing Weight Posted By : Nick Mutt

For a healthy life, you should maintain a balance between the carbohydrates, fat and protein intake. This article emphasizes on the role of food in weight management and how you can lose weight by diet specially designed for weight loss.

The intake of food must always be sufficient to supply the metabolic needs of the body. Since different foods contain different proportions of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, an appropriate balance must be maintained among these different types of food so that all segments can be supplied with the requisite materials.

The energy liberated from each gram of carbohydrate as it is oxidized to carbon dioxide and water is 4:1 calories (cal), and that liberated from fat is 9.3 calories. The energy liberated from metabolism of the average protein of the diet as each gram is oxidized to carbon dioxide, water and urea is 4.35 calories. Also these different substances vary in the average percentages that are absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract approximately 98% of carbohydrate, 95% of the fat, 92% of the protein.

Average American receives approximately 15% of their energy from protein, 40% from fat and 45% from carbohydrates. In most of the other parts of the world the quantity of energy derived from carbohydrates far exceeds that derived from both proteins and fats.

High proportions of fats and proteins are present in meat products and high proportions of carbohydrates are seen in vegetables and grain products. Fat is deceptive in the diet for it usually exists as 100% fat whereas both proteins and carbohydrates are mixed in watery media so that each of these normally represents less than 25% of the weight as food. Therefore, the fat of one pat of butter mixed with an entire helping of potatoes often contains as much energy as all the potato itself.

20 to 30 gms of the body proteins are degraded and used for producing other body chemicals daily. Therefore, all cells must continue to form new proteins to take the place of those that are being destroyed, and a supply of protein is needed in the diet for this purpose. An average person can maintain normal stores of protein provided the daily intake is above 30 to 55 gms. In general, proteins derived from animal foodstuffs are more nearly complete than are proteins derived from the vegetable and grain sources. Animal proteins have all the amino acids whereas many of the vegetable or grain proteins are only partial proteins.

When the diet contains an abundance of carbohydrates and fats almost all the body’s energy is derived from these two substances and very little is derived from the proteins. Therefore, both carbohydrates and fats are said to be protein sparers. On the other hand, in starvation after the carbohydrate and fats have been depleted the body’s protein stores are then consumed rapidly for energy, sometimes at rates approaching several hundred grams per day rather than at the normal daily rate of 30 to 55 gms.

So the role of diet in losing weight can’t be neglected. If you wish to lose weight, you need a diet program that guide you how to choose the right food and diet that help in weight loss. One of the highly recommended and bestseller diet program is the Stip that Fat diet system.

Fortis Healthcare to raise Rs 1,000 crore through rights issue

NEW DELHI: Hospital chain Fortis Healthcare is raising Rs 1,000 crore through a rights issue. The money would be used to fund the company’s greenfield projects and restructure the balance sheet, besides being utilised for other investment opportunities, a company release said. Additionally, the company plans to raise money through issue of warrants, but the amount and details of the warrant issue is yet to be decided.

Fortis Healthcare CEO & MD Shivinder Singh said, “The rights issue will enable us to restructure our balance sheet and set the base for a healthy future. Further, this gives an opportunity to our shareholders to participate and benefit from our growth.”

The share ratio and issue price of the rights issue would be finalised by February-end. The company board has also increased the authorised share capital of the company from Rs 400 crore to Rs 678 crore. At present, the company has around Rs 450 crore in debt and another Rs 250 crore of preference capital.

The company is setting up a medicity in Gurgaon and three new hospitals in Mumbai, West Delhi and Gurgaon. Fortis’
shares at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) closed at Rs 71.15, up 1.65% from Tuesday’s close of Rs 69.50.

There has been speculation that the Delhi-based company is in talks with two leading domestic hospital chains to pick up significant stakes and the money is being raised for these investments. But, the company management said that it is not in talks with ‘any of the rival hospitals’.

The company’s merger & acquisition team, however, is in talks with standalone hospitals for a buyout. Mr Singh had earlier said the company intends to complete the acquisition of a 100-bed hospital in either South or West India.

Last year, Fortis Healthcare raised Rs 496 crore through its maiden public issue and the promoters currently own 74.4% in the company. At present, Fortis Healthcare has 23 hospitals and plans to increase it to 40 hospitals by 2011.

Fortis eyes stakes in hospital chains

MUMBAI/BANGALORE: Hospital chain operator Fortis Healthcare is in talks with two leading players in the sector, Manipal Hospitals and Wockhardt Hospitals, for a stake buy.

Fortis may buy a minority stake in these hospital chains. The company is hoping to close the transaction in the current financial year, according to three investment banking sources, close to the development.

When contacted by ET, Fortis Healthcare CEO and MD Shivender Mohan Singh said, “We are scouting for acquisitions and are very much in the market. Talks are on with various hospital chains. However, I cannot comment on any individual deal.”

Fortis, which currently has 2,600 beds in 22 hospitals, wants to add 550 beds across the country, including 150 in Mumbai. A Manipal spokesperson said, “Manipal Health System is not part of any consolidation talks and is not in discussions with Fortis.”

It must be mentioned that Manipal has been in the market for raising Rs 400-450 crore for some time. An e-mail sent to Wockhardt Hospital didn’t elicit a response.

While confirming that Fortis has approached Manipal, banking sources said chances of Manipal doing a deal with a rival Indian player looked unlikely. Mr Singh had earlier told the media that the company was looking at a price of Rs 50-75 lakh per bed, and had earmarked a fund of around $500 million for acquisitions.

Market speculation suggests that Fortis is also talking with Chennai-based CMM Hospital for a possible equity purchase. Earlier this year, Manipal Hospital was in discussions with Singapore’s Parkway Hospital for a strategic deal, but the talks fell through due to differences on valuations.

Since then, it has talked to PE funds such as Arcapita, Bain Capital and ICICI Ventures for a possible deal. But discussions have not been conclusive due to current market conditions where liquidity has become a constraint.

Industry officials familiar with the situation said Manipal needs about $150 million for its expansion plans into western and northern markets. Manipal has 17 hospitals under its holding company Manipal Health System. However, it does not include Kasturba Medical College. Wockhardt Hospitals is also in the market to raise funds.
